Risk Factors for Heart Disease

Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) often times goes undetected or treated presenting the potential for more serious complications to occur, such as heart attack. Identifying your risk factors is crucial in assessing your risk of heart disease. Dr. Sokol and his staff at Five Towns Heart Imaging will provide a complete risk determination analysis for patients with risk factors.

Risk Factors for Heart Disease:

  • Increasing age
  • Male Gender
  • Post-menopausal women
  • Family history of heart disease
  • Smoking history
  • Poor diet
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • High stress level

Risk Factors for Diabetes

Here is what you need to know: Heart disease occurs twice as often in patents with diabetes as in those without. Nerve impairment prevents diabetes from feeling the symptoms of typical heart disease such as chest pain or heart pain that presents itself in the arms, back or neck. The American Diabetes Associations recommends testing for heart disease in patients who have diabetes and the following:

  • An inactive adult 35 years or older
  • A history of blood vessel disease in limbs or neck
  • Two or more of the following:
    • Smoking
    • Family history of premature coronary artery disease
    • High blood pressure ( 130/80 mmHg or higher)
    • Undesirable cholesterol levels such as:
      • Low HDL or “good” cholesterol (40mg/dL or lower)
      • High LDL or “bad” cholesterol (199mg/dL or higher)
      • High total cholesterol (200mg/dL or higher)
